Who are we?

This site provides the most important articles on Paine, the known and some soon-to-be-known new works, and the deattributions we have made. We were founded to correct the record on Paine, and rescue it from the negative propaganda and slander perpetrated against him by most historians in the 19th century. We are succeeding! Now we are on the threshold of making public our findings on Paine’s complete writings, after twenty years of research, and the establishment of the first official Editorial Board for the Collected Writings of Thomas Paine, staffed by the leading Paine scholars in the world.

In 2025, the US-based Thomas Paine National Historical Association and the UK-based Thomas Paine Society merged to form TPHA, an international consortium and membership association dedicated to Paine’s powerful writings and the ideas and issues that are as relevant today as they were over 200 years ago.

TPNHA board from 1894
The TPNHA Board from 1894, standing in front of the Paine Monument on North Avenue in New Rochelle, NY. On the right is Thaddeus Wakeman, a freethinker, professor, and noted philosopher, who took the lead in the creation of TPNHA. Also in the picture, in the rear wearing a hat, is Wilson MacDonald, the sculptor of the Paine bust on top of the Monument.

Founded January 29, 1884, in New York City, TPNHA is among the oldest historical associations in the United States, and the single most respected source for accurate information about Thomas Paine. Our mission is designed to ensure Paine’s rightful place in history as a preeminent founder of the United States of America and the key political theorist in the age of democratic revolutions around the world. In the course of his lifetime, Paine was the most influential political, philosophical, and social figure in the entire world.

Dr. Moncure Conway, a noted writer and abolitionist, was elected the association’s first president after incorporation in 1906. Conway is credited with writing the first comprehensive biography of Paine in 1892.
